“Midnight Special” Destined for Kansas City

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

Jeff Nichols’s Midnight Special is chugging toward Kansas City. Although no release date has been set, the movie is expected to open in April.

Midnight Special opened in limited release last month and has been garnering some of the best reviews of the year. The movie is a described as a science-fiction adventure, and that would seem to be a departure for Nichols, whose 2011 Take Shelter was (for this writer) one of the most arresting and revelatory releases of the decade precisely because it so specifically evoked—and understood—the Midwest of Ford F-150s and Wal-Mart Supercenters that lies about an hour’s drive from Kansas City in any direction.

Then again, Take Shelter wasn’t quite earthbound either. And with Shelter’s Michael Shannon returning (alongside Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, and Sam Shepard) who knows what to expect?

Stay tuned for more.
