CinemaKC Launch Showcases Film Commission of GKC

CinemaKC, a newly formed not-for-profit organization connecting film related groups in Kansas and Missouri, will salute the Film Commission of Greater Kansas City on September 16. In coordination with the Film Commission, CinemaKC will debut its film program with a special screening of a Student Academy Award winning animated short film created by Kansas City Art Institute students.

The program will also include a first look at NEXT!, the creative brainchild of Kansas City-based casting director Heather Laird, which took top honors in the Comedic Webisode category at the LATV Fest in Los Angeles.  Producers Teri Rogers and Nicholas Vedros will also attend.

The 90-minute program will take place Thursday, September 16 at the Screenland Crown Center at 7:30 p.m.  The showcase will be preceded by an industry mixer at 6:30 p.m.

“CinemaKC will help amplify and bring together the many voices of the film industry,” says founder John Shipp. “Our goal is to make filmmaking easier and better through collaborating and sharing resources, and to recognize outstanding achievements in film by area people,, companies and organizations.  We’ve got a tremendous and talented pool to draw upon.  We want to make it easier to identify all of these moving parts and to work together.”

As well as the periodic showcases at Screenland Crown Center, CinemaKC will encourage alliances among area filmmakers at its website, www.cinemakc.org  Future showcase screenings will include more strategic partners of CinemaKC.

CinemaKC is an initiative of the Film Society of Greater Kansas City, connecting with movie lovers since 1991.

It is the intention of CinemaKC to include and engage the general public. Please join us for our debut on Sept 16th and beyond as we showcase other film organizations and their members’ work.

We’ve heard from lots of people that they want to know more about what’s behind the scenes in film. There’s such a mystique around movies, stars and the whole process.

CinemaKC offers the general public a chance to get a producer, director, writer and/or actors with a movie. Part of the format for these evenings is a question and answer period at the end.

Looking forward to meeting you and your friend.

I agree that KC has all the elements needed to be a film hub, a really hot little corner of the indie scene, but what we really need here are great scripts with commercial vision and the financing with which to shoot them.

Homegrown cinema requires capital. Wouldn’t it be great if CinemaKC and the Film Commission could link filmmakers to investors and distributors to shoot features and shorts right here in the metro area? Why couldn’t we shoot a small slate of 1-3 low budget features a year? KC surely has the resources and talent to do so.
